James Baldwin's god: Sex, Hope, and Crisis in Black Holiness Culture| OMH Intensive Study
A Discussion on James Baldwin's God based on the book by Dr Clarence E. Hardy III
Classes will begin on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 7:00pm on zoom and in person at the Parish House.
James Baldwin is a highly complex and conflicting individual whose theology was shaped and then lost from the holiness culture emerging from Afro-Protestantism that at once informed his spirituality and at the same time pushed him away from it. Try as he might to run from it, it still formed the basis for his secular approach to art and his cultural critical work on race and Christian theology. Once more, his critique as it relates to body and sex positivity paved the way for others to challenge ingrained notions of sexuality and social order - particular as both inform race relations. Dr Hardy explores the roots of Baldwin's theology, examines his entire literary corpus as well as interviews and social critiques, and then delves into the issues and themes that pushed Baldwin away from Christianity. Baldwin's critique on Christianity and racism, Dr Hardy finds, ultimately leads to a religion based on love, beauty, and art. Join us for a deep dive into Baldwin's theology, his disconnection from religion, and his critique on sexuality, race, and social order.

The cross and the lynching tree| OMH Intensive Study
The Cross and the Lynching Tree Weekly Discussion
every Thursday, April 13 thru June 1, 2023 at 7:00pm
Please join for us an intensive study on Dr James Cone's book, The Cross and the Lynching Tree. This is a monumental book where Dr Cone examines how these two important symbols in Black American history represent the best and worst of Christianity in the United States. If we engage in an honest, sometimes painful conversation with one another about racism and Christianity, then we will grow stronger as a country. This book attempts to help in that process. We will hold a hybrid in-person/zoom service at 7:00pm each Thursday in the Parish. Please note, April 20 discussion will be Zoom only!
