God is red: a native view of religion by vine deloria, jr. | OMH Intensive Study
Thursdays, 7:00-8:00pm, March 14-June 20, 2024
Professor Vine Deloria, Jr. was one of the most influential figures in modern Native American studies. This book, originally published in 1973, has gone through several iterations since then. While the book shares insights into the reality of Native American life, it also explores their ignored history, the way the legal system conveniently exploits laws against their self-determination, the role of both native and non-native religious practices, and concepts such as sacred land, time, and space.

James Baldwin's god: Sex, Hope, and Crisis in Black Holiness Culture| OMH Intensive Study
A Discussion on James Baldwin's God based on the book by Dr Clarence E. Hardy III
October 2023
James Baldwin is a highly complex and conflicting individual whose theology was shaped and then lost from the holiness culture emerging from Afro-Protestantism that at once informed his spirituality and at the same time pushed him away from it. Try as he might to run from it, it still formed the basis for his secular approach to art and his cultural critical work on race and Christian theology. Once more, his critique as it relates to body and sex positivity paved the way for others to challenge ingrained notions of sexuality and social order - particular as both inform race relations. Dr Hardy explores the roots of Baldwin's theology, examines his entire literary corpus as well as interviews and social critiques, and then delves into the issues and themes that pushed Baldwin away from Christianity. Baldwin's critique on Christianity and racism, Dr Hardy finds, ultimately leads to a religion based on love, beauty, and art. Join us for a deep dive into Baldwin's theology, his disconnection from religion, and his critique on sexuality, race, and social order.
