"I
do" Preached by the Rev. Elissa Johnk
"I
do" Audio File
Who among us has not demanded of God “If you choose, you
can make me clean,”? Indeed, when we hold up the words of
scripture they must speak directly to this keen edge of death
nestled directly on our hearts. And this, I suddenly knew,
with the sounding board of that ancient pulpit looming above
me like a gavel, was the secret of the text: does God choose?
Additionally, today, we had the privilege of having
a small group of our youth offer their musical talents. A
clip of their singing can be found by clicking here: Charlie
and the Brown Eyed Girls singing the Song of Songs

"Swim/Swam/Swum:
The problem of time in the grammar of repentance"
Preached by the Rev. Elissa Johnk
The whole city in front of me, crowded into a small train
car – wrapped into themselves, into their books, their lives,
desperately trying to be alone. But I had the secret. If I
wanted them to pay attention to me, if I wanted all of the
people in Boston to stop, to turn, to stare, politely, like
at a car wreck, all I had to do was pull out a leather-bound,
black book. I might as well have been a circus act, rolled
out for them, right there in the middle of the subway.

"Light
of the Wor(l)d" Preached by the Rev. Elissa Johnk
"So today, on our celebration of epiphany, as we
stand in face of the newness of the days and nights that stretch
unused in front of us, I am going to ask you – challenge all
of us – to do the same thing: to open yourselves to the possibility
that maybe, just maybe, there is something in this light,
in this word, in this star, in this story, for you."

"Rejoice"
Preached by the Rev. Elissa Johnk
"Jesus came in a horror story. This was no accident.
Most major religions have celebrations now, near the
equinox, the longest night, because there is truth in this
darkness. It is in the darkness, with those that despair,
that the divine chooses to come. We find God, God finds us,
when we most need God. So it was for Mary. And so it was for
Marian, the shamanist octogenarian who introduced me to Christmas."
If you would like to know more about the women in this
sermon, the New York Times recently published an article on
the topic. It can be found here: http://www.nytimes.com/comfortwomen

"Already...Not
Yet" Preached by the Rev. Elissa Johnk
Advent is a paradox. It is the story of something that
has already happened, and the story of something yet to come.
And today, on this the very first day of our liturgical year,
I am going to resist putting these texts into a nice little
package, wrapped up with a pretty Christmas bow.
